As Goodnights As It Gets!
Jokes about goodness and nights and information about upcoming shows at Goodnights in Raleigh and also venues in Maryland and Boston and Ohio and Indy and KC and Wisconsin and MSP and Iowa!
dear friends, fans, family, fellow folks,
i’m grateful that you’re here.
thank you for being here and for being you!
and now, because i’m headlining Goodnights Comedy Club on 12/6-12/7,
here are some jokes and thoughts about NIGHTS that i hope you find GOOD!
A) is for Always:
"it's always darkest before the dawn"
"you mean at night?”
"yeah"
i understand the spirit of this expression, and it also tempts me to gently roast it by saying things like “it’s ALSO always brightest before the dusk,” but that wouldn’t be the nicest thing to say to someone when they’re having a nice time full of light!
the truth is, of course, it’s dark at night and light during the day, literally AND metaphorically much of the time. for example, how are you feeling right now? do you remember a time when you felt a different way? or has it been THIS WAY AND ALWAYS THIS WAY?
leonard cohen wrote “there is a crack, a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in” and that sounds right to me. (like a leonard koan.) even in the darkest times, light exists. and/or it will again. PS i almost just wrote “i don’t mean to make LIGHT of it,” but i do. i do mean to make light.
there is a crack, a (wise)crack in everything; that’s how delight gets in.
B) is for having a Ball:
the tv show “friday night lights”
sounds less like it should be about football
and more like jewish sabbath candles
i didn’t play football in high school (surprise!) like they do on “friday night lights,” and i ALSO didn’t celebrate the jewish sabbath by lighting candles on friday nights either (surprise?), but it’s good to know that if i had wanted to do the latter, i wouldn’t have been prevented to by the former. that is to say, good thing football wouldn’t have gotten in the way of my judaism. and i suppose the reverse is true as well!
C) is for Chess and also some other things:
"NO MORE MISTER NIGHTS GUY"
— someone deciding they're going to become a morning person
"NO MORE MISTER KNIGHTS GUY"
— someone deciding they're not going to play chess anymore, or go jousting
are you a morning person or a night owl? a human or a bird?
i remember one semester in college, i didn’t have class until the afternoon, and so i slept late, and then it was nighttime by the time i was done with classes. the next semester, i had all my classes in the morning, and afterwards, i remember being like THERE’S STILL A WHOLE DAY TO BE HAD!
now, i generally like staying up late AND waking up early AND getting enough sleep, but i usually have to choose two of the three of those options. UNLESS ANYONE KNOWS A BETTER WAY?!?
and now, for some questions for YOU!
1) how are you doing? how is your heart? what is new and good?
2) what light/delights are you finding these days?
3) are you a morning person or a night owl or some combination?
4) any thoughts on chess? or jousting?
5) how are you doing NOW?
feel free to leave a comment or respond to this if you’re receiving it as an email and i look forward to hearing from you!

First time reader, loved it :D
Maybe I'll answer questions in future but thanks for today:)
Hope to see you at the Satuday show in Raleigh.
1) how are you doing? how is your heart? what is new and good? I am well. My heart is well according to my doctors. New and good? Not much.
2) what light/delights are you finding these days? Walking, singing, etc.
3) are you a morning person or a night owl or some combination? I am a morning person in that I wake up before my alarm but I am a night owl. Part of aging.
4) any thoughts on chess? or jousting? One should not combine the two.
5) how are you doing NOW? Better, now that I've replied.
