dear friends, family, fans, fellow folks, friends again, friends always,
i’m grateful that you’re here.
thank you for being here and being you!
and now, for some good clean fun!
A) cleanliness is next to clutterliness:
my apartment is clean enough
that if guests come over,
i feel good saying
"sorry about the clutter."
this is a joke that i wrote in 2015 that was also the truth then.
in 2016 i met rini and began a lifelong relationship with her that now includes a home that is cleaner than i generally keep on my own.
home is where the heart is AND where the clothing is all put away neatly.
one of rini’s favorite jokes of mine is one i wrote before i met her:
”my girlfriend and i don’t subscribe to traditional gender roles where the man fixes things and the woman cleans things… so we live in a broken dirty house”
and now, we live in a healthy, clean home!
(she fixes a lot of things. and i clean more things now!)
B) cleanliness is next to mom-and-popliness:
looking to buy pomegranate juice?
AND something to clean up if you spill it?
don't go corporate.
shop at the mom and pop pom and mop shop.
and if you want to be even more progressive, shop sometimes at the mom and MOM store or the pop and POP shop or the PARENT AND PARENT place! maybe not as catchy, but sometimes progress is bumpy.
also, it’s kind of unfair that “parent” starts with “pa,” the name of the male parent. how about MArents? that could even be short for “male parent” OR “ma + parent”! or we could go with pmarents? or mparents? i’ll keep working on it. (or i won’t.) PROGRESS IS BUMPY!
C) cleanliness is potentially somewhere in the vicinity of funliness:
"it's hard to be clean in comedy."
"no, it's hard to be funny in comedy. it's easy to be clean and not funny."
so many people do it all the time!
and now, i’d like to share a related story about some interactions that i had around this time of year two years ago. a friend of mine asked this question:
"Has there been anything recently that you have realized / enjoyed / thought about / experienced that you'd be interested to share?"
and i replied with this:
Recently, I was booked to perform at a synagogue. I was told by my friend who referred me, that the woman in charge seemed a little nervous. (About whether the show would be clean enough, Jewish enough, things like that, and more.) In communicating with her, I found that to be resonant with my experience of her as well. A nice, nervous lady.
Today, I got an email from her that included a portion that I thought was hilarious. Not intentionally, and I don't mean to make fun of this nice lady, and also, well, here it is:
"A question:
Some comedians include a question and answer time as part of their show. Do you do this?
We are just looking forward to laughing with you and prefer not to have any question and answer time.
Just want to make sure that is okay with you."
She answered her own question!
(Also I told her I would be happy to not take questions.)
AND THAT IS THE THING I ENJOYED (THAT I HOPE YOU ENJOY AS WELL)
and that’s all from me for right now! now, how about from YOU? some questions:
1) how are you doing? how have you been? how is your heart? what’s new/good?
2) anything YOU have realized / enjoyed / experienced that you'd like to share?
3) do you have any favorite clean jokes?
4) how clean do you keep your home? HOW DO YOU DO IT?
5) how are you doing NOW?
finally, here are some places i’ll be performing in the coming times!
— Sacramento, CA on December 23
— Mill Valley, CA on December 26
— Manteca, CA on December 27
— Santa Rosa, CA on December 29
— Scotts Valley, CA on December 30
— San Rafael, CA on December 31
— Minneapolis, MN on January 10-13
— Des Moines, IA on January 20
— Ogden, UT on January 26-27
— Boise, ID on January 28
— Milwaukee, WI on March 15-16
— Lafayette, LA on April 18
finally, here’s a bathroom sign i saw that is not quite as progressive as a MPARENT & PMARENT SHOP, but i think is fun because it seems like it’s only open to farmer couples?
thanks for being here! much love to you and yours and all!
That is funny RE temple organizer only wanting laughter thru you but not as a give & take aka question & answer affair!
A) is introspective and sweet
B) is POM wonderful and tart
C) is endearing and tangy
I do have a favorite clean joke (the only joke I recall well enough to tell):
What Irishman stays out all night?
Paddy O’Furniture
Happy to see you’re performing in Cali! I hope to make it to one of those shows.
