dear friends, family, fans, fellow folks, friends again, friends forever,
i’m grateful that you’re here!
thank you for being here and being you!
and now, because it’s my dad’s birthday, here are some dad jokes!
A) is for A true, endearing story about my dad:
ME: dad, when do you usually go to sleep at night?
DAD: well, we normally go up to bed around 11 or 11:30pm, but when do we go to sleep? around 8 or 9pm.
this resonates with me deeply. like a deep sleep.
i frequently fall asleep watching tv (or watching computer) before bed.
often i’ll be watching a mystery which becomes even more complex when i don’t know which things i don’t know because i was asleep and which things i don’t know because the show is a mystery. in fact, every show becomes a mystery to me in this way. “WHO WAS THAT?” i’ll say. “the main star who’s been on screen nearly the whole time?” my girlfriend might kindly respond.
B) is for Bod:
there's been a lot said
about dad BOD
but not as much about
dad MIND or dad SPIRIT.
don’t mind if i do!
i think that a lot of my jokes stem from dad mind or dad spirit.
like this next one, for sure.
C) is for Character-building:
CHILD: dad, why do i have to do all this work to figure out all the attributes of this role-playing game being that i'm going to play as?
FATHER: it builds character
if you’ve never played a role-playing game, i might seem like the kind of person who’s played a lot of role-playing games. if you play a lot of role-playing games, you win. i’ve played some but don’t know a lot about them. i only hope that “character-building” is something that makes sense as a double entendre here, in the role-playing context AND the dad-adage (dadage?) context. if i have missed the mark, please will someone educate me? in a dad-like way? any dadvice?
D) is for Dad joke bonus haiku:
making dad jokes is
better than telling someone
they're making dad jokes.
in a judgmental way, i mean.
it’s like how using the wrong fork is less of an etiquette breach than yelling at someone for using the wrong fork. sometimes we’ll use the wrong fork. sometimes we’ll make dad jokes (which i think can sometimes be the right fork). when you come to a fork in the road, take the dad joke fork if you want to!
and that’s all the dad content for today! except for maybe these dadditions, in the form of questions for you:
1) how are you? what’s new and good? how are you feeling? how are you doing?
2) do you have any fun stories about your dad? or any dad? or anyone?
3) do you fall asleep while watching tv at night? or love someone who does?
4) any dad jokes or dadvice or daddendums you’d like to offer?
5) how are you doing NOW?
and now, a few shows that i’ve got coming up! with more on the way!
— Kansas City, MO May 4 (next weekend!)
— Dallas, TX on July 12-13
— Houston, TX on July 14 (just added!)
— Columbus, OH on September 11
— Cincinnati, OH on September 12
and finally, here’s a photo of my dad and me from this week, when we met at a Dunkin’ (formerly Dunkin’ Donuts, or DD, the two consonants in DaD, coincidence? probably!) to celebrate his birthday! photo credit: my dad!
love to you and yours and all and happy birthday to my dad and also everyone whose birthday it is ever!
C definitely didn't miss the mark. Very funny
What was your Dunkin' order? There are no donut places near where I live so please, let me live vicariously through your order 🍩
