dear friends, family, fans, folks,
i am grateful that you are here.
thank you for being who you are and where you are.
how are you? are you ready for some silly jokes and thoughts about nurturing?
if not, i’ll do what i can to get you ready by the end of this sentence!
A) a bit:
we always hear about "nature vs nurture"
but i am a bit more concerned today with
"nature vs people out to destroy nature."
the good (?) news is that people are also a part of nature. so, nature is going to win no matter what. even if humans make the planet completely uninhabitable for humans. that will be good news for whatever living beings remain! super-tough roaches that evolve into the new rulers of earth? good news is relative, is what i’m saying. rainy days might not be your favorite, but people who sell umbrellas love them! unless they’re acid-rainy days, perhaps, and the rain eats through the umbrellas. but maybe those super-evolved roaches will invent a better umbrella? only time will tell!
B) naturally:
you don’t hear as much about freaks of NURTURE.
now, i’m glad to say that i haven’t recently heard people use the phrase “freak of nature” much as well! and that is (to me) good news! because the phrase always has a bit of an ableist connotation to it, i think. what is a freak? someone different. someone who thinks and acts and manifests differently than… you? someone else? everyone? we’re ALL different! i mean, i’ll speak for myself here. I’M different from everyone who’s not me, i think. maybe you’re all the same. but i think you’re unique also. of course, there are so many things we share, so much that we all have in common (being made of carbon, being concerned about the future where only super-roaches can survive on this planet, etc), but also there are so many things that make you you and make me me. we’re all UNIQUES of nurture AND nature!
C) nurturally:
“is having a large stomach due to nature or nurture?”
“um...”
“is it belly genes or jelly beans?”
“oh”
“you thought i was asking a real question”
“yeah”
“NOPE!”
do you know the story of the frog and the scorpion? basically, the frog is heading across the river and the scorpion asks for a ride because the scorpion can’t swim. the frog is like “no, you’ll sting me” and the scorpion says “if i sting you, then we’ll both drown and why would i do that?” so the frog is like “okay, that is logical, hop on.” (fun and ironic that the FROG is telling a DIFFERENT creature to HOP on.) so, the scorpion hops on and then halfway across the river, the scorpion DOES sting the frog. and as they’re both about to drown, the frog asks the scorpion “why?” and the scorpion replies “it is my nature.”
now, i tell you that story because i’m a bit of a wordplay scorpion. making joke out of spoonerisms like “jelly beans” and “belly genes” is MY nature. or my nurture. part of my unique freakiness. and i’m just glad that no one has to drown as a result of my nature. it just might sting for a moment.
and that’s all the nurturing fun for the moment!
now, for some questions for YOU:
1) how are you feeling? how is your heart? what is new and good with you?
2) is it nature? nurture? neither? both? your thoughts?
3) what’s something that’s in YOUR nature? what’s a way you are YOUnique?
4) did you know that frog/scorpion story? do you have favorite stories like it?
5) how are you doing NOW?
