dear friends, readers, listeners, experiencers of all kinds,

thank you for being here!
i am very grateful for your time.
as you may know, i generally use this space to share short jokes, poems, and other quick word units of fun.

sometimes, i use it to share slightly longer pieces i’ve written, often in response to questions other folks have asked me. here’s the story of this one: previously on “this person asking me questions about writing and performing,” this person asked me about becoming a standup and my main advice (the only advice really) was to “write and perform, write and perform, write and perform”!

and now, further questions and answers!

QUESTION FROM THEM:

is it not completely contrived to think i could become a comedy writer without doing stand up?

ANSWER FROM ME:

there are people who are comedy writers who don't do standup, who have never done standup. for them, i would say the "write and perform" advice simply becomes "write and write, write and write, write and write." rewrite, edit, write, edit, write, edit, rewrite. in any order. or no order!

whatever you want to be doing, do that. if you want to be writing scripts, write them. if you want to be writing monologue jokes, write them. if you want to be writing standup, write it.

it's very simple: it's difficult!
