1. i understand from having been on a ship that there is a difference between ships and boats and some people care very much about that difference and this footnote is for them.

2. since the back of the boat is called the stern, i thought about titling this nugget “stern to the future” but i decided against it, after i gave myself a stern talking to. (i did NOT decide against including all of this here though.)
